What 205/55 R16 91V means

The symbols on the sidewall are not a secret code. Select a symbol and the diagram shows the corresponding measurement.

Tread width

The tread width in millimetres. A wider tyre offers more cornering grip, but also more rolling resistance and usually more noise.

You do not need to remember all this: enter your vehicle or type approval number above and we will take care of the rest.

Assessment

The VANTIQ Index

One score from 0 to 100 instead of ten data sheets: braking distance, wet grip, rolling resistance, longevity and noise are combined into a single value. The basis is shown transparently for every tyre.

Editorial assessment based on test reports, technical data and typical use in Switzerland. These are not our own measurements — we complement tests by organisations such as ADAC and TCS; we do not replace them.

How do I know which tyre size my car needs?

Size

The size is shown on the tyre sidewall, for example 205/55 R16 91V. The size decoder above explains what each element means.

If you do not want to go out to the garage, check field 24 of the vehicle registration document for the type approval number. Enter it in the search above and we will show you the sizes approved for your vehicle.

Can I fit a different size from the approved one?

Size

You may only fit sizes approved for your vehicle. There are usually several — often three to five across different rim diameters. Any other size requires an inspection report and an entry in the vehicle registration document.

Our search only displays approved sizes. Anything that does not fit is excluded.

What do the load index and speed rating mean?

Size

These are the two elements at the end of the size. In 91V, 91 is the load capacity — 615 kg per tyre — and V is the approval for speeds up to 240 km/h.

Neither value may be lower than the one approved for your vehicle. Higher values are permitted. The only exception is winter tyres, which may have a lower speed rating if a notice is displayed in the driver’s field of vision.

How much does delivery cost in Switzerland?

Delivery

Delivery is always free when the tyres are sent directly to our workshop.

OrderDelivery throughout Switzerland
1 tyreCHF 19.90
2 tyresfree
4 tyres (set)free

How long does delivery take?

Delivery

Each tyre shows a specific delivery date — not merely “fast”, but a weekday and date. The calculation takes stock levels and the time of order into account.

There are no weekend deliveries; orders placed on Friday evening are dispatched on Monday.

Can I have the tyres fitted?

Delivery

Yes, in 8304 Wallisellen. Select “Delivery with fitting” for the tyre; after your order, we will arrange an appointment with you. The tyres will be ready when you arrive.

Are the tyres factory-new?

Quality

Yes. We do not sell used or retreaded tyres — every tyre leaves the warehouse unfitted and unused.

We cannot guarantee a specific production date in advance because the tyre assigned to the order is determined during picking. The question about the DOT code explains how to check its age yourself.

How can I tell the age of a tyre?

Quality

Check the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits show the date: in DOT U2LL LMLR 2625, 26 is the calendar week and 25 is the year 2025. This tyre was therefore made at the end of June 2025.

The code has used four digits since 2000. If it only has three digits, the tyre is more than 25 years old and should no longer be fitted to a vehicle.

What is the VANTIQ Index?

Advice

An overall score from 0 to 100. It is based on three sources: publicly documented independent comparison tests, official EU tyre-label data and editorial calibration for tyres designed for particular uses. Each tyre’s score is accompanied by an explanation.

It is an editorial assessment, not our own measurement — we do not operate a test track. Price, our margin, availability, supplier and brand prestige do not affect the score.

Do I need winter tyres in Switzerland?

Advice

There is no general legal requirement to fit winter tyres. However, anyone who obstructs traffic with unsuitable tyres may be held liable — and the insurer may reduce its benefits.

The deciding factor is not snow but temperature: below around 7 °C the winter compound has the advantage; above it, the summer compound performs better.

Summer, winter or all-season tyres — which suits me?

Advice

Two sets cost more to buy, but together they last longer than one set of all-season tyres — each set is only used for half the year.

Low mileage, Swiss Plateau, rarely in the mountainsAll-season
Regular mountain passes, Pre-Alps or winter sportsTwo sets
High mileage, mainly motorway drivingTwo sets

How should I store the second set?

Quality

Keep them cool, dry and dark. Store tyres without rims upright and rotate them slightly every few weeks; stack complete wheels flat or hang them.

Wash them and note the tread depth before storage — otherwise, by spring you may no longer know which wheels were fitted at the front.

About VANTIQ

Buy tyres online in Switzerland

Find the right size

Every vehicle is approved for specific tyre sizes, and only those sizes may be fitted. The type approval number under item 24 of your registration document identifies the permitted sizes. Enter it in our search to see the approved options. If you already know the size, enter it directly: 205/55 R16, 225/45 R17 and 195/65 R15 are among the most common sizes on Swiss roads.

Summer, winter or all-season

The rubber compound matters, not the tread pattern alone. Below about 7°C, a summer compound hardens and braking distances increase; above that temperature, a winter compound wears faster and brakes less effectively. All-season tyres suit drivers who cover few miles and stay mainly on the Swiss Plateau. For regular mountain driving, two separate sets remain the better choice.

What the VANTIQ Index provides

The EU tyre label shows three values: rolling resistance, wet grip and noise. That is not enough for a purchase decision — longevity and dry braking distance are missing, and the classes are broad. The VANTIQ Index combines verified individual measurements from independent comparison tests across eleven seasonally weighted criteria and shows the basis for every tyre. Linked test reports are listed separately with their source; we do not adopt third-party overall ratings.

Delivery and fitting

Delivery is free throughout Switzerland from two tyres; delivery of a single tyre costs CHF 19.90. For fitting, select “Delivery with fitting” on the tyre. After your order, we will arrange an appointment with you at 8304 Wallisellen.
