What does 225/45 R17 mean, and why read the rest?
225 is the nominal width in millimetres; 45 is the sidewall-height-to-width ratio. R means radial construction and 17 is the wheel diameter in inches. The calculated nominal sidewall height is 101.25 mm. But the following markings, such as 91Y or 94W XL, also matter when ordering. A photo showing only “225/45 R17” leaves these distinctions unanswered.
Understand tyre size91 or 94 XL: do I need the reinforced tyre?
Load index 91 represents 615 kg and 94 represents 670 kg per tyre under the specified conditions. XL identifies a reinforced version. Follow your vehicle requirements, not the idea that more is always better. If 94 XL is required, a cheaper 91 is not a substitute. A higher tyre load capacity does not increase your car’s permitted payload.
Michelin · Load and speed ratings91V, 91W or 91Y: why several offers?
V represents 240, W 270 and Y 300 km/h; H represents 210 km/h under the defined conditions. These are technical categories, not encouragement to drive fast. Check the rating required for your vehicle and season. Then compare prices for suitable specifications: a cheaper 91V is not automatically a substitute for another required marking.
Michelin · Load and speed ratingsGolf, Octavia, Audi A3 or BMW 1 Series: does this size always fit?
No. The model name alone is not enough. Year, engine, brakes and wheel configuration can change the requirements. Check approved combinations in your vehicle documents and the requirements for both axles. This page lists offers in one size, not a universal fitment list for those cars.
Understand tyre sizeOn a BMW, are the star marking and run-flat the same?
No. The star identifies a BMW-specific specification; run-flat describes continued-mobility capability after pressure loss. XL does not replace RFT or another manufacturer’s run-flat marking. Compare the full tyre designation with the intended equipment. Before changing from run-flat to conventional tyres, discuss the conversion with your vehicle or fitting specialist.
BMW Switzerland · Star marking and run-flatFor comfort: 225/45 R17 or 205/55 R16?
The nominal sidewall of 225/45 R17 is calculated to be 11.5 mm lower. These sizes need different wheels. That alone establishes neither interchangeability nor a guaranteed comfort gain. If both combinations are approved for your car, compare complete wheel sets, including tyre model and specification. A 16-inch tyre does not fit your existing 17-inch wheel.
Understand tyre sizeCan I order 225/50 R17 instead?
Not as an equivalent replacement. At the same nominal width, the calculated sidewall increases from 101.25 to 112.5 mm and the outside diameter from 634.3 to 656.8 mm, around 3.5 %. The shared 17 only describes wheel diameter. Changing size requires a suitable, approved wheel-and-tyre combination.
Understand tyre sizeAre all-season tyres enough for my Swiss driving?
If you mainly drive in lowland areas and can postpone trips in difficult conditions, they are worth comparing. For regular mountain journeys or essential travel in all winter weather, we would first consider separate summer and winter sets. Do not decide solely to avoid two changeover appointments: which conditions can you actually avoid?
TCS · 225/45 R17 · 2025 · PDF DEWhich of the two all-season tyres should I choose?
We would start with Continental for a balanced daily-use tyre. We include Goodyear for frequent journeys with wear in mind. Their overall 2025 ADAC grades are identical, but their strengths are not. We do not directly compare the earlier Goodyear index with the current Continental index. Compare the complete package.
TCS · 225/45 R17 · 2025 · PDF DEIs the more expensive tyre worth the difference for four wheels?
Multiply the unit-price difference by four if your car needs four identical specifications. Add fitting, balancing, valves or TPMS servicing, and any delivery charge. Our four-tyre price covers tyres only, not fitting. A higher purchase cost is not automatically recovered through longer life.
What pressure does 225/45 R17 need?
There is no universal pressure for this size. Use your vehicle manufacturer’s values for the axle, load and wheel-and-tyre combination. Check cold where possible and before a loaded holiday journey. Do not release air from warm tyres simply to reach the cold-pressure target. Repeated pressure loss needs its cause investigated, not just repeated inflation.
Michelin · Tyre inflationWhat about fitting and balancing?
Include professional fitting and balancing of the wheel-and-tyre assembly. Ask what the quoted cost covers: valves, disposal and any TPMS work? A vibrating steering wheel does not immediately justify buying another tyre model. Have the wheels, tyres and fitting checked first; an off-centre steering wheel or one-sided wear may have another cause.
Michelin · Balancing and alignmentWet grip A: do I still need the test?
The label offers a quick comparison of the exact specification. It does not replace a detailed assessment of handling, aquaplaning, snow or wear. That is why we show it alongside the index, not instead. We do not fill missing label fields using a similarly named variant. Open the product page or its EPREL reference when data is missing.
EU tyre labelWhat should I check before ordering?
Size, load and speed ratings, XL, run-flat and any vehicle-manufacturer marking. Check front and rear axles separately. Then choose the model and season. The EAN identifies the exact offer; one model name can cover several technical versions. Already know your required specification? Choose your season above or open the full selection.
