All-Season Tires
All-season tires – also known internationally as all-weather tires – combine the characteristics of summer and winter tires. They are designed for various weather conditions and can remain on the vehicle all year round, eliminating the need for seasonal tire changes.
While this versatility is practical, it remains a compromise: an all-season tire must perform on warm asphalt as well as in cold, wet, and snowy conditions. How well it succeeds depends heavily on the specific model and your personal driving profile.
Who are all-season tires suitable for?
All-season tires can be a sensible choice if you primarily drive in the Swiss Central Plateau, cover relatively few kilometers per year, and can leave the vehicle parked in case of heavy snowfall.
All-season tires are particularly interesting for city vehicles, second cars, and vehicles primarily driven on well-cleared roads. They save you the semi-annual tire change and eliminate the need for a second set of stored tires.
When are two sets of tires better?
If you frequently drive in mountainous regions, need to remain mobile in winter regardless of the weather, or cover many kilometers on highways, you are usually better off with separate summer and winter tires.
Summer tires offer greater performance reserves at high temperatures. Winter tires are specifically designed for cold, snow, and ice. Two specialized sets of tires therefore allow for better adaptation to the respective season.
All-season tires in winter
Not every all-season tire offers the same winter characteristics. Look for the snowflake symbol – also called 3PMSF – on the tire sidewall. It indicates tires whose winter suitability has been proven in a standardized test.
However, even a marked all-season tire does not automatically achieve the performance of a good winter tire. Before purchasing, therefore, the area of use, annual mileage, and expected road conditions should be considered.
Wear and total costs
All-season tires save the costs of seasonal changes and storing a second set. However, because the same tire is used throughout the year, it will reach its wear limit correspondingly sooner.
Whether all-season tires are actually cheaper therefore depends on your mileage. For low annual mileage, the concept can be worthwhile. For high mileage, two specialized sets of tires are often the more sensible long-term solution.
Finding the right size
The tire size is indicated on the tire sidewall, for example, as 205/55 R16 91V. In the Swiss vehicle registration document, the individual permissible tire sizes are usually not fully listed.
For newer vehicles with IVI vehicle data, you can conveniently select your vehicle on VANTIQ by make, model, body type, and engine. Alternatively, enter the type approval number from field 24 of the Swiss vehicle registration document. We will then show you the tire sizes stored for your vehicle.
