Summer Tires
Summer tires are designed for warm roads and higher temperatures. Their rubber compound remains stable in the heat, ensuring precise handling, reliable grip, and the lowest possible wear. The tread is designed to effectively displace water, even in heavy rain.
When should I change?
The often-mentioned 7 °C is a guideline, not a strict limit. The actual weather conditions are crucial: if temperatures remain consistently mild and no snow or ice is expected, switching to summer tires makes sense.
Those who book an appointment early usually benefit from a wider selection and avoid seasonal workshop congestion.
Why winter tires are not suitable in summer
Winter tires have a softer rubber compound and many fine sipes. These characteristics improve grip in cold weather, snow, and ice. On warm asphalt, however, they can lead to less precise handling, longer braking distances, and increased wear.
Rolling resistance can also increase. As a result, winter tires wear out faster in summer and can increase fuel consumption. If you want good performance in winter, you should not drive your winter tires all year round.
Summer or all-season tires?
All-season tires can be a practical solution for vehicles with low annual mileage and predominant use in the Swiss Mittelland. Modern models are significantly more powerful than previous generations and carry a certified winter marking.
Nevertheless, they remain a compromise: a single tire must perform in summer heat as well as in cold and snow. Those who drive a lot on highways, regularly travel in mountainous regions, or want the highest possible performance reserves in every season are usually better off with separate summer and winter tires.
Wet conditions and aquaplaning
Wide longitudinal grooves and an appropriate tread design help to displace water from under the tire. How early aquaplaning occurs depends, among other things, on speed, water depth, tread depth, and tire pressure.
The wet grip rating on the EU tire label evaluates braking distance on wet roads. It is an important guide for safety in rain but does not directly indicate a tire's aquaplaning behavior.
Finding the right size
The tire size is indicated on the tire sidewall, for example, 205/55 R16 91V. In the Swiss vehicle registration document, the individual permissible tire sizes are usually not fully listed.
For newer vehicles with IVI vehicle data, you can conveniently select your vehicle by make, model, body, and engine on VANTIQ. Alternatively, enter the type approval number from digit 24 of the Swiss vehicle registration document. We will then show you the tire sizes stored for your vehicle.
