Manufacturer approvals on the tyre sidewall

MO, AO, N0 or a star: These symbols stand for a tyre that a vehicle manufacturer has had developed and tuned for its models. What they mean - and which abbreviations are not approvals at all.

An approval is not a requirement

A tyre without a marking can be used as long as the size, load and speed index are correct. The type approval of your vehicle and the operating instructions are binding - not this list.

For leasing, guarantee and warranty questions, the vehicle manufacturer can still request the marked version. If in doubt, ask us or your garage.

Developed together

Vehicle and tyre manufacturers work together to match the tyre to a specific model - to the chassis, weight and handling of that car.

Marked on the flank

The coordinated version has its own symbol on the side wall, usually one to three characters behind the size information.

Not identical in construction

Rubber compound, casing and tread may differ from the commercial version of the same tyre. So the same name does not mean the same tyre.

The marking is usually at the end of the line, directly after the load and speed indexes. Some manufacturers also place it on the opposite sidewall.

Approvals that appear in our range

Sorted by frequency. The identifier is on the flank, usually directly behind the size information, and is listed in our product data. The number of items per manufacturer only counts each tyre once; individual tyres can have multiple identifiers.

BMW and MINI

Since the 1990s, the star has stood for tyres that BMW has approved for its models. It is usually located directly behind the size information.

Mercedes Benz

MO means Mercedes Original. MOE refers to the same coordination in the version with run-flat properties (Extended), MO1 refers to the tyres for the AMG models. MOS and MO-S are written differently depending on the data source and are added together here.

Audi

AO means Audi Original; AO1 and AO2 are later votes in the same series. RO1 and RO2 come from Audi Sport and sit on the quattro and RS models.

Porsche

N0N1NE0ND0NC0NF0NA0N2NA2NG0N4NA1N3NA5NF1

The number indicates the development stage, not the quality: N3 is not better than N0, but is tuned later - usually for a newer model.

For the younger series, Porsche has a second series with letters instead of numbers: NA0, NC0, ND0, NE0 and NF0. Porsche does not publicly announce which series stands behind which letter - we therefore list them without interpretation.

Jaguar and Land Rover

JLRJLR

J stands for Jaguar, LR for Land Rover. Both brands belong together; on newer flanks JLR also appears for both.

Volvo

VOL

VOL indicates tyres that Volvo has tailored for its models.

Maserati

MGT

MGT indicates the tyre version tailored for Maserati. The identifier does not belong to Mercedes-Benz.

Tesla

T0T2T1

Tesla has its own comments coordinated - rolling resistance and noise count more in electric vehicles because there is no engine noise to cover them up.

Ferrari

K1K2FF01K3F02F03

K with a number and F and F with a number stand for Ferrari tuning. Here too, the number refers to the design, not the quality.

McLaren, Genesis and Hyundai

GOEMCHNMC1MC-C

GOE stands for Genesis, MC for McLaren and HN for Hyundai. These identifiers are now managed as separate approvals in the product data.

No approvals, just tyre features

These abbreviations describe the design, comfort or intended use: emergency operation, self-sealing, low noise, EV suitability, rim protection, load capacity or winter suitability. They are not an approval from a vehicle manufacturer.

This is the most common mistake. “NCS”, “EV”, “Seal”, “SSR” or “XL” are tyre characteristics and not vehicle approvals. DT and DT1 designate variants or development statuses and are also not adopted as approvals or product features. Conversely, a tyre with an MO designation is not automatically a run-flat tyre.
