Previous tyre model or successor: when is the new one worth it?
The successor has arrived and the previous model is cheaper. Do you have to buy the new number on the sidewall? Not automatically. Correct specification, reliable information and whether you need one replacement or a full set matter more.
Model age and tyre age are different
A long-established model may have been manufactured recently. A new model name does not by itself reveal the production date of the supplied article. The generation describes the product concept; the date marking describes production.
Keep the two separate. An offer is not poor solely because a successor exists. A new generation does, however, deserve a fresh comparison rather than automatically inheriting older test results.
A test result does not follow the brand name
A predecessor’s good result in a particular size is not a measured result for the successor. Even a very similar name can identify a different product. Check generation, dimension, test year and discipline.
TCS recommends considering test results and individual requirements together. We do not turn that into a claim that every successor improves every characteristic. TCS: buying tyres.
A single replacement is a different decision
For a damaged tyre, first establish a permitted and technically sensible combination with the remaining tyres. A successor is not automatically an identical replacement. Vehicle instructions, specifications and the others’ condition all matter.
With a full set, you can compare candidates more freely, still within suitable specifications. Identify which qualities matter and which are actually substantiated. A list of manufacturer superlatives is not sufficient.
How we would weigh the price difference
Put two complete offers side by side. Record the real difference for the set, not just the discount percentage, alongside documented advantages relevant to your journeys. If the extra money buys no identifiable benefit, that supports the predecessor. A relevant, well-evidenced improvement can justify the successor instead.
Leave unknowns open. No test is not a poor score, but does not justify borrowing the older model’s result. Compare offers through size selection. The VANTIQ Index explains its own method and is not a converted test grade.
