BMW xDrive: replace one tyre or more than one?
One tyre is damaged and the other three still look good. It is understandable not to want a full new set immediately. But the first question is the existing combination and the vehicle’s requirements, not simply “one or four?”.
Why an internet rule is not enough
BMW considers unsuitable or unevenly worn tyres in diagnosis for certain xDrive drivetrains. A publicly available bulletin concerning ATX13-X transfer cases calls for recording brand, model, star marking, DOT, tread depth and circumference at all four positions.
Its attachment specifies a maximum 2 mm tread-depth difference across all positions in the described context. That is a specific requirement in this document, not universal permission for every BMW below 2 mm, or a remote diagnosis of shuddering. Current vehicle-specific instructions remain decisive. Information that helps the workshop
Have all four tread depths measured properly, not just at one convenient spot. Add the complete tyre descriptions and wheel sizes for both axles. Establish whether an approved staggered setup is fitted and whether the versions form the intended combination.
A sidewall photograph helps identification, but does not replace condition assessment or damage inspection. Comparing printed dimensions alone also cannot answer every question about the fitted set.
Several possible outcomes
The assessment may allow an identical individual replacement within the vehicle’s requirements. It may call for an axle pair, or show that the remaining tyres cannot reasonably be combined with the new ones. The word xDrive alone cannot decide the answer.
We therefore recommend neither four tyres automatically nor the cheapest single replacement by default. Ask for a reasoned explanation based on measurements and vehicle requirements. Existing noises or shuddering need diagnosis; purchasing tyres is not a confirmed repair diagnosis.
Identify the product before comparing prices
Once the technical decision is made, search the exact model, size, ratings and star marking where required. A similarly named successor is not automatically an identical replacement position.
Our manufacturer-marking guide and size guide help you read the details. Ask about sourcing an already specified version through Contact. This avoids buying too much out of fear or too little based on a simplified rule.
