Inside, Outside, Rotation: is your tyre fitted correctly?
The tread appears to face a different way on the left and right. Has something gone wrong? Not necessarily. Correct fitting is determined by the markings on the actual tyre, not whether the grooves look symmetrical to you.
Outside identifies the outer side
An asymmetric tyre has different tread areas. The side marked Outside faces outwards and Inside inwards. This does not automatically create separate left and right tyres. Without an additional directional restriction, the tread can therefore look different on each side while being fitted correctly.
Continental distinguishes these designs in its tread-pattern explanation. The markings on your specific tyre take precedence over a generic image.
Rotation identifies the rolling direction
A rotation arrow specifies the intended direction when the vehicle moves forwards. This is different from identifying the outside face. If both types of instruction are present, both need to be respected.
Do not infer the required direction from one V-shaped groove. Read the sidewall and ask the workshop to explain anything unclear. A fitment that contradicts the markings needs professional correction.
Same model name, different tread?
This is possible. Michelin describes different tread designs for the Pilot Alpin PA4 depending on size. It is a concrete reason not to rely on an image of another article. Michelin: Pilot Alpin PA4.
Check the precise size and version when replacing. Different grooves from a photograph justify checking identity, but do not yet prove a wrong delivery. Compare article information, sidewall and manufacturer data together.
Why wheel swaps are not always unrestricted
Moving an already assembled directional wheel to the other side reverses its rotation. Axles may also differ in tyre size or rim width. The rotation pattern must therefore suit the vehicle and wheel set.
At collection, check the full description, Outside facing out where applicable, and arrows matching forward travel. Resolve doubts with the fitter before normal use. You do not need to dismantle anything yourself; the aim is knowing which questions to ask. Our size guide and fitting information provide further help.
